I picked up my down comforters and pillows yesterday and I am so happy with the end result. The new pillows have loft and are really fluffy, and the comforters have perfect weights. My king sized comforter fit perfectly into my store bought duvet and is already on my bed.

The ticking is really really tightly woven so I can't imagine ever seeing a feather poke through...important to me to keep dust down. Every item has a handwritten tag sewn into it that it was made "with love by Elizabeth...", a very special touch!

One thing to note, if you want a specific ticking you'll need to order before you have her get started. She has a single ticking available to her right now so if you require something specific you'll need to hunt down the fabric first.

In a day where we're all trying to be green and eco-friendly, recycling your old down products is just one more step that everyone can do. And I'm sure the ducks and geese will thank you, too. Even your old ticking can be recycled as textiles...so take it home, bag it up, and recycle that, too!

I originally discovered Down Home Comforts many years ago when the owner, Elizabeth, was interviewed by Martha Stewart for her TV show. Elizabeth has a very rare skill: she takes old down pillows and blankets, removes the down, and puts it into new ticking, creating heirloom quality down blankets and pillows that (with care) will last a lifetime. There are maybe two or three people in the entire US that provide this service.

She works out of her home in Windsor, Connecticut in her basement which is her workshop. She has sample tickings from all over the world, but nowadays she works with a basic white ticking that down can't poke out of.

When you bring her your used down products she cuts them open to analyze the quality of down that you have. If it's beyond hope she'll let you know. But she knows her down and can tell you if it has enough loft to be used again. If not, she can add in extra down to make up for it (at a cost, of course). She then vacuums the down out of the blankets and pillows, weighs it, and if it's usable it gets placed in fresh new ticking to be enjoyed again.

Prices are on her website, but to create a new king sized down comforter using your old down products runs $145. A standard pillow? $30. Compare this to what you actually pay in department stores for very lightweight pillows and comforters and you'll see that it's worthwhile to recycle your down products.

Elizabeth explained to me that one lady customer of hers goes to tag sales (garage sales on the west coast) and buys up old blankets and pillows that are in good condition and then sends a bunch of them to her each year. For $145 each, she converts these older down products to 1 or 2 high quality down comforters.

I dropped off 3 queen sized comforters (20 years old or so) with wretched ticking and 6 pillows. They are being converted to 1 king sized mid-weight comforter, 2 twin sized mid-weight comforters, and 2 standard sized pillows (firm). My bill will be about $400 but this is what you'd pay for the king sized comforter alone of this quality/weight.

I'll re-review once I've picked up my products, but so far I am quite impressed with Elizabeth. She works fast and I expect that everything will be done 7 to 10 days after I dropped everything off.
